EBB is the ebiquity research group\\\'s blog at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). We focus on technologies that facilitate the design, implementation and control of distributed, intelligent information systems -- mobile and pervasive computing, ad hoc networking, multiagent systems, knowledge representation and reasoning, and the semantic web. As the tides of technology ebb and flow, we hope the good ideas wash up on our beach and the bad ones drift back out to sea.

If the links are set to "no follow" what's the point in spamming a link? I'm a few months after the last poster, does that automatically categorize the comment as spam? You might want to loosen your filters.

Spammers who try spam their spam here won't get a so called "vote" from this blog because the links are set to rel="nofollow". So a backlink from this blog/page is not nearly as powerful as a page that has a rel="dofollow".

I hope I just made sense...

Furthermore Edu and Gov domains are SEO-wise very attractive to gain more pagerank. Edu and gov domains are SEO-wise(to get backlinks from) better than top level domains like .com and .org.

Furthermore, the Akismet on my Wordpress installation does a wonderful job:-)

@Sunil: that's horrible! So many spammers >:( I know how it feels because my forum was under attack of porn spammers well...

So, you don't like spammers, but still spam on this post to attract the spammers from Google, such as myself. Cool ;-) But basicly I'm not spaming, I mean how is this not a legitamte comment? ;-)

Hi Tim,

Just wondering how you think your comment spam magnet is doing?

To me it seems to be a pretty weak magnet since the comments that have been posted seem to be contributing to your blog post.

Anybody that takes the time to read your article and write a comment that contributes to the discussion cant be considered a spammer even if they have a link back to a commercial website with related anchor text.

Whats the difference between commenting on a blog post written 2 years ago and one written 2 days ago. If its still a valid subject that someone has an opinion on, why not share it?

If you have any knowledge about this blogging platform, you would know its has nofollow commands on outbound links so anybody spamming this post for backlinks are wasting their time anyways.

Well but not anything is going through your Askmet Filter,
the biggest magnet for Manual Spam is if you are ranked high in Google for Search Terms, Blog Comment.
And for a .edu backlink a good SEO will just spend 5 minutes to write a theme relevant comment and post just some URL in the Website Field.
But why not giving a Backling as a Tribute for a relavant Comment.
That prectice is even better than this dozens of bot generated Spam entries.

I think it's ironic that you decide to single out 1 site that's prolly one of the least commercial just because they posted 2 years late. There are more than enough spam on that blog post since the first post. It's still an honestly amusing fact though.

What classifies as spam? Would my comment be erased because I might have said something offensive (I have utmost respect for you btw)? What if you write something informative but it's short and sweet? What if it's thought provoking yet uses a spam link?
