Abstract: There have been many fundamental transition points that have altered human history for all time:

  • the ability to grow our food rather hunting for it;
  • learning to talk to each other, even if in many languages;
  • learning how to write our ideas down, and on and on.
Today around the world, we are all in the midst of an Informatics Transformation - the use of computing to extend our human talents and skills in incredible ways that were unimaginable even a few years ago.

And in this region in particular, we are in the midst of a unique scientific informatics transition unlike any where else on earth, brought on by our many federal laboratories, our industry and public and private colleges and universities. And most of us are so caught up in our own little parts of it that we can't comprehend how big or important this transition is and will be in our futures.

50, 500 and 5,000 years from now, people will look back on this period and our region as the beginning of perhaps the most significant transformation in human history - the harnessing of computing power to extend our abilities in every dimension. And all of us have the unique privilege of being here at the beginning of this momentous period!

The Informatics Coalition is a group of volunteer technology leaders in our region seeking to awaken understanding of the impact of informatics on our lives and ways that we can make it even more effective today and for all time to come!
