Ms. Lai's expertise is in the design of human-computer interfaces, specializing in the use of speech recognition and synthesis technologies. Her research has covered a broad range of topics related to speech technologies and their integration into applications. These include the perception of synthetic speech; productivity applications for mobile workers; smart spaces; multimodal interaction on pervasive computing platforms, as well as awareness servers.
Lai has been a guest lecturer at MIT, Michigan University, Tampere University, Pace University, and a National Science Foundation panelist. She is a member of the Editorial Board for the International Journal of Speech Technology, the author of two book chapters and is widely published in the areas of mobile solutions, speech interface design, and perception of synthetic speech. She also holds seven patents related to interface design and has participated in numerous conferences as a program committee member, keynote speaker, session chairman, and panelist.
