Dr. Norman Augustine is a retired Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Lockheed Martin Corporation. He served on the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology in both Democratic and Republican administrations and Chaired the National Academy of Engineering from 1994 to 1996. Dr. Augustine led the highly influential National Academies panel that authored "Rising Above the Gathering Storm," that delineated steps that federal policymakers could take to ensure a strong competitive position for the United States in the emerging global economy. Dr. Augustine has received numerous awards and honorary degrees. On November 28, 1990, Dr. Augustine received UMBC’s Engineer of the Year Award and delivered an address entitled “A Nation of Doers: America’s Future Depends on Engineering.” In his concluding remarks he stated that “Engineering makes the incredible happen all the time. Almost every day, in fact. I am enormously proud to be part of the Engineering profession. And that makes me enormously proud to receive your Engineer of the Year Award. I thank you all.”
