Biography:
Robert Holte is a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Alberta. He received his Ph.D. from Brunel University (UK) in 1988. Prior to joining the faculty at Alberta in 2001, he held positions at the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Ottawa, and the University of Waikato in New Zealand. Dr. Holte's research aims to develop scientific understanding and improved algorithms in the areas of machine learning, and heuristic search, and to explore practical applications of techniques in these areas. His current machine learning research investigates cost-sensitive learning and learning in game-playing, including opponent modelling in poker, and adaptive commercial computer games. Hisresearch on heuristic search investigates automatic techniques for speeding up search, such as the automatic creation of search heuristics.
