Sol Greenspan
Collaborator
Sol Greenspan came to NSF in 2002 as Program Director for the Software Engineering and Languages Program. In the newly reorganized CISE directorate, he resides in the Division of Computing and Communication Foundations (CCF) where his responsibilities include software engineering, programming languages, compilers, high dependability computing (joint program with NASA) and topics in information technology research (ITR). He also coordinates a new, cross-directorate initiative called Science of Design, which is in its formative stages (look for information in early 2004).
Dr. Greenspan came to NSF after many years at GTE Laboratories, where he led research groups/projects and technology transfer efforts to improve software and systems practices and their alignment with business operations. He had previously held positions for several years each at Bell Laboratories in New Jersey and Schlumberger-Doll Research in Connecticut, as well as shorter stints at IBM Research and Softech. He has served on several blue-ribbon panels for research laboratories and government agencies, and has consulted for industry and governments in the U.S., Canada and Europe on requirements engineering, business process re-engineering, and software development methods and tools.
In 2002, Dr. Greenspan consulted in the health care industry while teaching graduate courses in systems and software requirements engineering in both London (UK) and Massachusetts, and he has recently become a Research Affiliate at MIT in the Software Design Group.
Dr. Greenspan has served on the editorial boards, since their inception, of the Automated Software Engineering Journal and the Requirements Engineering Journal, and until recently he served for 10 years on the board of IEEE Communications Magazine. He has served on many program committees and on the Steering Committee for the International Workshop on Software Specification and Design, also the International Conference on Requirements Engineering, which he co-chaired in 2002. For four years, until 2002, he chaired IFIP Working Group 2.9 (Software Requirements Engineering).
Dr. Greenspan received his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from the University of Toronto for work in the intersection of artificial intelligence and software engineering. His M.S. in Computer Science is from Rutgers University, he has a B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Michigan.
