    <person:biography><![CDATA[Dr. Jacob Slonim was the Dean of the Faculty of Computer Science at Dalhousie University. Prior to his academic career he was Head of Research in the Centre for Advanced Studies at IBM. Dr. Slonim hold numerous honors and awards in recognition for his work in information technology including the ACM Upsilon Pi Epsilon Award for outstanding PhD dissertation, a citation from the President of Israel for contributions to Israeli industry, and an award from the Computer Society of the IEEE for his outstanding contribution to the development of industry/university collaborations. He was one of the first researchers to work in the field of distributing computing. He contributed to the development of distributing transaction processing and holds the patent for a component that is used in banking systems today. His research interests include software engineering, multi data base and distributed data base management, network interface to database management systems, and distributed processing systems. In addition to his many contributions to industry, he is involved in the development of communications architecture for
functionally illiterate people, using Alzheimer's Disease as a preliminary model. ]]></person:biography>
